Driven by a passion for storytelling and innovation, Artemis Zih-Jie Weng is a dynamic new media artist and XR creative technologist specializing in immersive storytelling and spatial computing. With over four years of experience, her expertise spans audio and music production, world-building, and interactive simulations, with a focus on how digital and physical realms intersect to reshape human experiences.

In 2023, Artemis graduated from Goldsmiths, University of London, with a BA in Design. During her studies, she became fascinated with how technology connects to the human experience. Her project “Goldsmiths Metaverse” used WebGL and VR in Unity to explore how digital spaces can break down cultural, linguistic, and temporal barriers. This immersive project laid the foundation for her ongoing exploration of how virtual environments foster empathy and bring people together.

Artemis also experimented with blending physical materials and digital concepts. In her VR project “Welcome to Uncanny Valley,” she turned concept of the uncanny into a spatial reality. Participants navigated familiar yet distorted environments like corridors and buses, creating an unsettling experience. This project combined photogrammetry and hyperrealistic silicone sculpture to heighten the tactile eeriness, bridging the gap between real and virtual.

In 2024, Artemis began her MA in Digital Direction at Royal College of Art, becoming the youngest candidate in her program. Her cinematic adaptation of UE5 game “Consciousness in The Landscape” was selected for IRCAM Forum 2024 in Paris and earned Runner-Up prize in Sensory at Innovate UK Immersive Tech Awards. Alongside 3D environment design and gameplay VFX, she managed all aspects of audio production, cinematography, and editing. These accolades were driven by her expertise in crafting immersive experiences and ambisonic music.

In addition to her studies, Artemis worked on UE5 virtual production for an award-winning film, collaborating with teams from LCC (UAL) & University of Westminster. She also completed a successful year as Lead Coordinator for the Outernet x RCA immersive media exhibition ‘NOW, GATHER, CHANGE,’ while serving as Programme Representative (EDI) for MA Digital Direction, for which she won Student-Led Staff Awards as Rep of the Year.

Her graduate film, “Serendipity: Beyond the Mist,” was selected to exhibit at Outernet and BBC TVC. An AR version will debut at Saatchi Gallery at British Art Fair 2024, pushing boundaries of new media art and establishing Artemis as an innovative voice in immersive storytelling.

PROJECT

2024    RADIANT FORTUNES: THE RED PAPER DANCE
           • Selected to exhibit an augmented reality (AR) piece on the Fifth                               Plinth as part of “PIVOTAL: Digitalism”, a groundbreaking                                           section of the British Art Fair dedicated to digital art.
           • The upcoming exhibition will take place from 26 to 29                                                September 2024 at the prestigious Saatchi Gallery, highlighting                              the intersection of art and technology.
           • Radiant Fortunes: The Red Paper Dance is an AR piece that                                      reimagines the traditional art of Chinese paper cutting as a                                      vibrant, digital experience.

           • Intricate red patterns, rich with auspicious motifs, folklore,                                       blessings for good fortune, come to life through augmented                                    reality, symbolizing preservation & continuity of cultural heritage.

           • By merging timeless craftsmanship with modern technology,                                  the piece invites viewers to immerse themselves in these                                        traditions, fostering a deeper appreciation for how enduring cultural                     artistry can be experienced & honoured in the age of Digitalism.

2024    SERENDIPITY: BEYOND THE MIST
           • Directed & produced a CG animated film using UE5. Managed                                   all aspects of production, from concept to completion.
           • Premiered at Outernet, London, on July 24th, 2024, and was                                     showcased from August 2nd to 5th, 2024.
           • Featured at the BBC Television Centre’s Big Screen at the Artist                               Showcase 2024.

2023    CONSCIOUSNESS IN THE LANDSCAPE
           • Responsible for 3D Environmental/Level Design with UE5,                                        Gameplay effects & Triggers, Immersive Audio (Sound and                                      Music) with Logic Pro, Animated Sequences in UE5 and Video                                  Editing with Adobe Premiere Pro.

           • Explores how human curiosity interacts with different                                               environments as they evolve, producing experimental sound                                   that reflects their movement. The contrasting outputs make for                               a fascinating comparison in results, as each playthrough is unique.

           • Player explores a route through a forest landscape, which                                        gradually evolves into a city landscape using Anthropocene imagery

2023    WELCOME TO THE UNCANNY VALLEY
           • Built and optimised a virtual environment in Unity for running                                  as standalone in Oculus Quest2.

           • "Welcome to the Uncanny Valley" is an immersive VR experience

that turns the uncanny valley into a spatial reality.

           • Participants navigate through eerily familiar yet distorted                                         environments, such as corridors, stations, and buses,                                               seamlessly stitched together into a claustrophobic, airless                                       space. These recognizable settings feel warped, as if they exist                               in a liminal realm just beyond the ordinary, intensifying the                                     quiet terror of the unknown. Lifelike human forms are                                               embedded into the architecture, blurring the line between body                               and space, heightening the sense of disorientation and dread.

           • A key element of the installation is a hyper-realistic silicone                                    face, identical to one seen in the VR space, which participants                                  can physically touch. This tactile interaction deepens the unsettling                        sensation and bridges the gap between virtual and physical reality.

2022    THE UNCANNY & MUNDANE
           • A body of work that explores the proximity between

realism and eeriness. Examined by deviations from

plaster/silicone face cast based on shrinkage of alginate mold.

           • Research and familiarize with biomaterial. Found an

adapted, cheap, simplified gelatin recipe that functions

similarly to silicone but in a formulation that can be

              remelted, reused, and recycled.

2022    DISSOLVING REALITIES
          • Highlighted by Goldsmiths on Instagram & GoldDust

             publication.
          • Created point cloud animation by Blender, Camera AR track,

LiDAR 3D scanned daily places like Design Studio

& underground to document extra dimensions of reality in a

             more cinematic way.

2022    ESCAPE TO GOLDSMITHS METAVERSE
          • Self-directed. Explore connections between schoolmates that

communicate with existing barriers of culture, language, or

time. Created a playable virtual world with Unity. Created 3D

assets, avatars, textures, and game interfaces with Blender &

             Figma.

2022    LORE OF LONDON
          • Alone revisited group project. Aim to raise awareness of

climate change through emotional appeals & reimagining the

future of flooded London 2090 if no action is taken now. Alone

designed a world by creating fictional narration and 3D assets.
